a noticeable change in the weather. let's check in with steve. >> thank you very much. we have clear skies. it will be sunny and cool and breezy today. temperatures in the 20s and 30s. low 40s. they will end up in the low 50s. again much below average compared to last week when we were above. here is sal. good morning, traffic is moving nicely in san jose and along northbound 280 getting up to highway 17 and beyond. also the morning commute looks good on the bay bridge toll plaza as we roll on into the city. the traffic is looking good in san francisco as well. let's go back to maureen and dave. we are starting with developing news this morning. right now firefighters are battling flames in pinole. ktvu tara moriarty is there. she is back there live with the details. tara. >> reporter: we just arrived on scene a couple minutes ago. we're here at this house off of sarah court. it's really right off of

interstate 80. as you can see crews are still here. they are trying to get a handle on this fire. they are spraying water in an entry way. looks like a washer and drier. we did have a chance to speak to the homeowners. they woke up and heard popping noises. they smelled plastic burning and decided to get out of the house. they are standing right over here. right behind me here. and this apparently here is the boy's father actually owns the house. they decided to rent it. they justed move in. >> reporter: started this fire. we're not told if it's suspicious or not. we will find out for you live from pinole i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. your time is 5:01. overnight news man is recovering after getting caught in a cross fire. police got a report of a shooting at 63rd avenue and mccarthur boulevard. they found bullet casings at the scene and victim on the next block. he had been shot twice in the arm and is expected to survive. investigators believe he was just an innocent bystander. no arrests have been made. 5:02. investigation is under way in a deadly shooting by a santa clara police officer. it happened as a driver suspected of drunk driving was pulled over. coming up for you in about 12 minutes. why police say that officer says he had no choice but to open fire. oakland police are still

are looking for a teenager accused of sexually assaulting a two women. 14-year-old glasper may be armed and dangerous. the first attack happened january 6th near 12th and market streets. six days later another woman said he was assaulted on 11th street near martin luther king junior way. if you have any information about glasper and where he is contact oakland police. time is 5:02. firefighters are still watching out for hot spots for a fire in san rafael. it started last night at a 90- year-old residential building. christien kafton joins us live this morning. >> reporter: firefighters are still here on the scene. let's give you a look. it might be hard to see. we saw a firefighter walk down this alley a couple moments ago with a flashlight trying to look for a hot spot that has been here all night. we have watched as firefighters have went back and forth

spraying water on the hot spot. we arrived shortly before 4:00. i had a chance to walk through this building myself and see some of the damage up close. the fire started at 7:30 last night. it started in the back upper unit. quickly engulfed the whole building. in my tour i saw the back area imparticular a deck where the fire may have started. i saw extensive charring inside that building at this point it appears the fire traveled through the roof and engulfed the whole building. crews have been on scene putting water on the hot spot throughout the morning. >> there have been no injuries to any of the residence nor any of the firefighters. firefighters are still working. they have a stubborn fire in this attic area working aggressively to put it out. >> reporter: coming back to our live shot, the crew that is on the scene here right now will be replaced by another crew in about an hour. they are still watching for hot spots at this time. if you take a look over here

you can see one of the firefighters returned from having checked that hot spot here. a little bit later on they will be bringing out a fire investigator to figure out how this fire started in the first place and again from firsthand experience i can tell you that investigator will have their work cut out for them. because there are parts of the building that simply are not there anymore. there might be very little evidence to determine exactly how this fire started. we continue to follow this investigation. for now we are live in san rafael christien kafton. if you use the website craigs list police have a warning. be extra careful after a string of armed robbery. they are creating a fake posting or responding to ads selling products. that's when they rob victims when it's time to complete the transaction. police are advising to always meet in a public place. a battle is brewing over

plans to cut down thousands of trees in pacifica. it's one of the areas that is part of the controversy. others include san francisco's mount davidson and glen park canyon. supporters want to remove 18,000 trees because they are nonnative trees. time now 5:05 tickets go on sale this wednesday for the 49ers game where they will host the nfc championship game for the first time in 14 years. this is after the new york giants upset the defending super bowl champs green bay packers. presale tickets start at 10:00 a.m. on wednesday. at 1:00 tickets will be open for the general public. there is a limit four tickets per order. playoff tickets will be sold through ticket master online or over the phone. they will not be available at

candle stick park. as you can expect, ticket brokerrers and the scalpers are already selling tickets to the game. we went online. we found prices ranging from $300 to $1200 a pop. the bay area bars, restaurants and hotels are also seeing a jump in their business. for example, the intercontinental san francisco plans to offer special football packages. meantime the team rolled out the red and gold carpet for one of the most devoted fans. brett barrett. he has terminal cancer. they got him and his wife tickets to the new orleans saints game this saturday. >> picked us up in the car and took us to the game. got to meet alumni players. really unique. >> barrett's flew in from utah. brett said it was his first football game in person ever. we have an entire page dedicated to the 49ers playoff win at ktvu.com.

northbound 280 traffic moves well. i think i said martin luther king. it's martin luther king junior. i know because i'm a junior. it's important. cold out there. 22 in fairfield. 27 in livermore. and 29 in napa. if it wasn't for the breeze, it would be colder. now there will be colder temperatures tomorrow morning. today looks good. sunshine. our pattern has changed. we are on the cooler pattern. we were way above on the temps for the longest time. that is not the case anymore. everything is dropping straight down out of the north. everything drops straight on down. we won't get any moisture out of this. the moisture doesn't arrive until wednesday. this is what we are keeping our eye on. all this. looks like the rain line will stay north on wednesday. thursday through sunday does look very promising. 24 now in fairfield. 28 napa. 27 in livermore. even some upper 30s. even city is 41. they just dropped to 41.

good morning. welcome back be the republican field for presidents is a little smaller this morning. former utah governor john huntsman is dropping out of the race and endorsing romney. he said his campaign would continue in south carolina which holds the next primary this coming saturday but huntsman has been polling at the bottom of the pack in south carolina and nationally. the five remaining gop candidates will take part in a debate tonight in south carolina. mitt romney, ron paul, newt gingrich, rick santorum, and rick perry will take the stage tonight in myrtle beach and again on thursday for another debate in charleston. analysts say more candidates may drop out if they don't do well in south carolina. the next contest is then florida's primary on january 31st. 5:14. vice president joe biden is coming to san francisco this week for campaign fundraising. on wednesday vice president

biden will attend a luncheon fundraiser. tickets are ranging from $2100 to $10,000 a ticket. the money will go to president obama's reelection campaign and the democratic national committee. iran is now warning its persian gulf neighbors not to increase their oil output to replace iranian oil that is facing an international ban. iran has been threatening to block the straights. a third of the oil tanker traffic passes through that area. they are pressuring other countries to cut back on their oil purchases from iran in one way to punish iran to stop working on its nuclear program. in syria dozens of prisoners that have been arrested for taking part in antigovernment demonstrations were just released. arab league observers appeared

to be keeping an eye rob the arrest. syria agreed to an arab league plan that agrees to other things including releasing all prisoners. there are 42,000 political prisoners in custody. your time is 5:15. santa clara police and the district attorneys office will investigate the fatal shoot of course a santa clara police officer. it happened saturday. the uniformed officer said he pulled over a 42-year-old santa clara man suspected of drunk driving. the officer became uncooperative and reached for a gun in his car. that's when the patrolman shot and killed him. >> the man reached for a resolver prompting -- revolver prompting the officer to stand back and discharge his firearm in self-defense. >> the officer has been a patrolman for two years. they have not released his name or the identity of the motorist

killed. apple taking a very unusual step to head off criticism related to its overseas factories. apple is sending independent auditors into the plant where its devices are assembled. that is reports after 12 suicides at chinese partner factories. it found many cases of under age workers and excessive work hours in those facilities. this week the sonoma city council will work on a moratorium in chain stores. to limit those businesses from coming to the city. that could effect san francisco based william sonoma. they want to return to sonoma and open a store at the original site on broadway where chuck williams first started selling cook ware in 1956. >> so that is where the name william sonoma came from. this is a holiday martin luther king junior holiday. sal, how are the roads looking?

just depending if you get that breeze. hayward at 34. and san jose 38. the breeze is out of the north, northwest. now if you don't have that breeze, temperature plunges. if you do it stays up. it will be cool and breezy today as the system carves itself out to the north of us. the pattern has changed thankfully. it has changed to winter like. we are not getting any moisture out of it. we are focusing our attention on this. a very cold morning here. sunny and breezy. great visibility. good air quality. how about that. we have very good air quality. then we will take a look at this system. there is a lot out there. it just has to w its way toward us. and it will. right now i'm holding off on the rain. i will bring it in thursday. we still have three days to iron this out. friday looks like off and on rain. these will be mild systems. we are starting off with cold air and we have a warmer system

coming in. cool and breezy today. cold morning temperatures low 50s instead of the upper 60s to near 70s that we had for a long, long time. tomorrow morning will be very cold. increasing clouds wednesday. we'll go rain on thursday. offer and on rain on friday. it does look unsettled on sunday. time is 5:19 opinion european markets are mixed this morning. part of that is in response to the moody credit rating agency. it would maintain france's top tier aaa credit rating but update the rating before march. standard -- standard and poor downgraded their rating. all the major markets in asia and the pacific lost close to 1%. meanwhile all the u.s. markets are closed today for the martin luther king junior holiday. here are the closing numbers from friday. the dow is down 48.

nasdaq down 14. s & p down six. the country's largest retail group expects solid sales this year. not as strong as in 2011. the national retail federation expect sales will grow 3.4% this year. that is cam pair -- compared to the 4.7% increase last year. economists say that is $50 billion more than last year. most of the difference is because of higher prices. big names in the ski industry joining forces for an event that threw ten years away. why they want to show what reno and lake tahoe could offer for international sports. the bay area cities topping a new list. good morning, southbound 101 approaching the 580 interchange. it looks good. coming up we'll tell you more of what the bay bridge toll plaza looks like.

in the morning until sunset on the day of the competition. outside pillar points hotel. mavericks will be held sometime between now and march 31st depending on when the biggest waves roll in. if there is no contest, the festival will still take place on march 31st. they want to bring the winter olympics back to lake tahoe. executives from squall valley and vail have been elected to the reno tahoe winter games board. the first hurdle will be getting the u.s. olympic committee to choose the resort as its premier resort. thieves steal the bases from an east bay girls softball team. they are part of the union city softball league made up of girls between 4-14 years old. coaches say last week thieves

broke into their storage shed at union city park. an estimated $14,000 worth of baseball equipment was stolen. >> it may push back the practice start date. it may push back our start date of the season. because we don't have the equipment to get them going. >> girls all provide their own gloves. they still have to replace the stolen equipment. so far used bats have been donated from teams. the coaches say they still need things like catchers gear and helmet mets. they are hoping to have everything they need in time for the opening day in march. your time is 5:26. in honor of the martin luther king junior holiday a new list is out on the tolerant cities. a daily beast website says durham, north carolina is the most tolerant city in the country. honolulu was ranked number two. san francisco came in at number three. san jose at 14 and vallejo at 15. they compiled the list by

westbound bay bridge coming into san francisco no major problems. no problems on the lower deck. let's go back to the desk. thank you. still following developing news from pinole. firefighters still at the scene of an early morning house fire there. tara moriarty is there as well to tell us how the residence inside suddenly had to get out of that house. tara. >> reporter: that is right. crews are still battling some of the hot spots there. they say the next step is to figure out how exactly the fire broke out. thousand 4:30 firefighters got the call for a house off of sarah port and that is near interstate 80 and pi fell valley road. a man and woman woke up to hear popping sounds. glass breaking and then they smelled the plastic burning. >> the gentleman of the house said there was broken glass inside and they started smelling smoke and he went to the front door and saw their

smoke coming from the front door. they went out the back of the house and came around the front and the entire front of the house was on fire. >> reporter: it actually jumped through the window in the back to get out. everyone is safe including their family dog. officials believe the fire started in the entry way of the home. there is a drier and a washer that are located in that entrance. the residence says they were not plugged in yet. arson investigators will be called in to see if this was an accident or if it was set on purpose. now pinole valley fire department says one of their stations that is located a half mile from this home closed down in july. they say the response time would have been much sooner had the station not been closed. we're live in pinole i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. our time 5:32. overnight news richmond police just called off a search for a

gunman after a shooting near railroad tracks. this happened around 3:15 on ohio near first. richmond police tell ktvu a 43- year-old man flagged down a passing train. told the conductor he had been shoot by one from a rooftop. richmond police searched that area. so far they have not found thinking. the shooting victim is expected to survive. san francisco's new sheriff is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow on criminal charges stemming from accusations that he physically abused his wife. on friday prosecutors charged sheriff ross mick rheumy. the sheriff was booked and released from the jail he oversees on $35,000 bail.

78-year-old joseph naso is on trial in marin county charged with the murders of four women from 1977 to 1994. they found a scribbled note at his home mentioning the north bay town. time now 5:33. new information this morning about a deadly weekend crash in the south bay. 51-year-old stacy longburg has been arrested after a pickup truck she was driving crashed and killed her husband and daughter. this happened saturday afternoon on highway 85 near last gators. she sideswiped another car and her truck rolled over several times. she was arrested on drunk driving and vehicle manslaughter. more red light cameras may be coming soon to marin county.

the independent journal reports san rafael city officials will soon talk about whether they should expand their red light program. these cameras are operated by red flecks. it's the same company that operates the cameras in napa. san rafael placed two red flex cameras along irwin street two years ago and the city is estimating the cameras bring in $80,000 worth of revenue every year. 49er playoff tickets have been the hottest ticket in town. they will host their first nfc championship game in 14 years. allie rasmus is life in san francisco with when those tickets will go on sale. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, maureen. no doubt 49er fans are still enjoying the thrill of the exciting game on saturday and taking in what it means. it means the nfc championship game will happen with the niners and the new york giants. it will happen here in san francisco next weekend. and that means more excitement

for fans and a likely boost for a lot of businesses in the bay area. sports bars, stores, and hotels will be getting ready for that. this t-shirt company has put in an order for 50,000t-shirts with an nfc championship 49er logo. they are betting on the fact the niners will win and the t- shirts will be sold if the niners do win. hotels in san francisco are offering special hotel packages for giant fans and 49er fans will be coming in from out of town. we took a list on craigs list and stub hub and tickets are -- you hear people driving by cheering on the team. tickets go anywhere from $300 to $5,000 depending on the seats. now nfc championship official tickets will not be sold until wednesday 10:00 a.m. for season ticketholders. 1:00 in the afternoon for the general public.

encouraged to do volunteer work. now yesterday members of dr. king's family helped place that wreath at the new memorial in washington dedicated to dr. king. it's right there on the national mall. there is dr. king's son martin luther king iii helping to place the wreath with his wife and daughter. if dr. king was still alive today he would be 83 years old. >> here in the bay area there are several events honoring dr. king. one of them is the freedom train. they will leave at 9:30 this morning. it will stop in sunnyvale, palo alto, and san mateo before arriving in san francisco. the ride commemorates dr. king civil rights movement. the day is also inspired a local of volunteer projects. 200 doctors and nurses will volunteer at a middle school painting buildings and restoring a garden.

in richmond volunteers will repair homes along south sixth street. and in oakland they will be cleaning up 20 city blocks. there are also several other areas to commemorate the holiday. we have all of them listed on our website at ktvu.com. let's check back with sal. and the holiday is effecting what would be a commute this morning. >> yeah it's making a little lighter than usual. traffic is moving along pretty well around the bay area. as a matter of fact, you can see traffic looks good if you are driving on the east shore freeway getting out to the mccarthur maze with no major problems. also the morning commute looks good if you are driving on interstate 880 in both directions. now definitely we will have traffic that people will be out there. not a lot of just crowded conditions. looking at the nimitz freeway a little farther down we see traffic is moving well. if you are driving in livermore valley westbound 580 looks

good. we are also checking the south bay. let's go to steve. thank you. a very good cold morning. we will have clear skies. it will be nice today. temperatures low 50s though. it will be a cool breezy day. in area where is the temperatures have plunged i have seen 20s. browns valley up in napa one of the coldest i can find around 24. there is a lot of upper 20s. i've seen a couple near palo alto as well. but it's a very cold morning. breezy though. clear. some 20s inland. there will be more tomorrow morning. we have 30s and even 41 in san francisco. but the temperature trend has been to bring it down. that was beautiful last week into saturday. sunday changes. today will be really cool. tomorrow about the same. i don't think we will get out of 54 debros tomorrow or today. 24 fairfield. livermore at 27 degrees. i think yont vail is 29. there is a lot.

wednesday for sunday's playoff game between the 49ers and the new york giants. the season ticketholders they get the first crack starting at 10:00 a.m.. tickets to the general public go on sale at 1:00 p.m.. all tickets will be sold through ticket master. either by phone or online. tickets will not be sold at candle stick park. time is 5:45. happening right now a fire is raging at a southern california refinery. these are live chopper pictures over the conoco phillips in the area of wilmington. that is in los angeles county. this is an administrative building on fire. they do not expect to save it because of the flames already coming. you can see they have several trucks already set up dousing the flames with water. and we have learned 120 firefighters are fighting this. no word on the cause at this
